June 10, 2015

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our transition team met again on June 2nd and June 9th, 2015 to support the movement of the students from Prince Arthur Junior High.  Students who will be in grades 7 & 8 next year are going to Southdale-North Woodside.  Students who are entering grade 9 will attend Dartmouth High School. I would like to share the following updates:

Transition Planning:

  • The current principals of Sackville Heights Junior High and Millwood High School attended our June 9th meeting to share their experience with the Sackville and Millwood transition last year.  Students in grade 9 were moved from the junior highs to the high schools.  Students from grade 6 are now with the grades 7 & 8 students in the junior highs.  Both principals stated that even though there was apprehension about the changes last year, the students have said the move has been a positive experience. The older students in both the high school and junior high were welcoming and helpful to their younger peers.
  • Both principals shared their solutions to the junior high students’ participation on sports teams. The grade nine students have played with their peers in grades 10-12. Dartmouth High School has both varsity and junior varsity opportunities for most sports. The Nova Scotia Schools Athletics Federation (NSSAF) made an amendment to accommodate a grade 6-8 league.

Operations:

  • Representatives from HRSB Operations department attended the meetings. They completed a walk-through of the Southdale-North Woodside site to identify any work that needs to be done to ready the building for the new students and they reviewed procedures for packing and moving furniture and equipment to the two new sites.
  • A portable has been ordered for the Southdale-North Woodside site to accommodate an alternate space for some of the junior high physical education classes, extra-curricular activities and EXCEL. There is enough space in the building for each of the 8 additional junior high homerooms.
  • Committee members are exploring the availability of gym spaces in close proximity to Southdale-North Woodside for use by the junior high sports teams.

Transportation:

  • A request has gone forward to Stock transportation to determine the start and end times for the school day at the Southdale-North Woodside site. We are waiting for a response.
  • Parents of junior high students are reminded that the Halifax Regional School Board Student Transportation Policy states; In accordance with the Education Act and Regulations student transportation will be provided to secondary students who live 3.6 kilometres or more away from school.

Staffing:

  • Teachers from Prince Arthur assigned to teach grades 7 & 8 will join the students at the Southdale-North Woodside site. Grade nine teachers will join the grade nine students at Dartmouth High School.

Events:

  • Prince Arthur students in grades 8 and 9 attended an orientation at Dartmouth High on June 5th.  Students stated that they felt the warm welcome and they enjoyed the event.
  • An orientation/ice-cream social event has been planned for all students entering grades 7 & 8 and their families at Southdale-North Woodside on June 16th from 5:30-7:00pm. An invitation was sent out to families of Prince Arthur Junior High students in grade 7 and the families of students in grade 6 from the feeder schools.
  • An Open House is being planned for June 23rd from 6:30-8:30pm at Prince Arthur to allow students, their families and the community a final walk through of the school. A time capsule was buried on the property of Prince Arthur Junior High a number of years ago. If anyone remembers where this is, contact the principal, Scott Hickman.

May 29, 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The transition committee supporting the movement of the students from Prince Arthur Junior High to Southdale North-Woodside and Dartmouth High School met on Tuesday, May 26th. The transition team includes representation from Prince Arthur Junior High, Southdale North-Woodside and Dartmouth High School. The committee includes SAC members, staff, students and administration. The committee plans to meet on Tuesday evening each week until the transition plans are completed. We are excited to share the following information:

Staffing:

Teachers from Prince Arthur Junior High have been assigned positions at either the Southdale North Woodside site or the Dartmouth High School site. The vice principal from Prince Arthur, Norma McIntyre, will join the students in grades 7 & 8 at the Southdale site along with the newly appointed principal, Adrienne Blumenthal.

Programming for students:

The committee addressed concerns that were raised about the ability to provide junior high programming for students in grades 7 & 8 at the Southdale North Woodside site. After touring the spaces assigned to the junior high classes, committee members commented that they were pleased by the size of the classrooms and the width of the hallways. Alternate spaces to accommodate physical activities, other than gym classes, are being explored. The students will have access to the following electives: exploring music, band, art and technology education. An inventory of technology currently housed at the Prince Arthur Junior High site has been completed. Outdated computers will be replaced by new Google Chromebooks and all other technology, such as LCD projectors and laptops will be moved to the Southdale site.

Grade 9 students will to take grade nine courses required by the Public Schools Program. The courses will be offered in a semester system to streamline the sharing of learning spaces such as the gym, the art room and technology production spaces. The committee is exploring models used by other grade 9-12 schools within our board to provide sports team experiences for the grade nines.

Transportation and Safety:

Staff from the HRSB Operations department has been invited to attend our next transition meeting. Representatives from Stock Transportation have been contacted to review the bussing schedule and transportation requirements at both sites. More information should be available after our next meeting.

Event Planning:

Committee members shared ideas for events to support building relationships with the students and their families transitioning into the new schools. Orientation events for grade 6 students from South Woodside and Shannon Park, along with grade 7 students from Prince Arthur Junior High and their parents are being organized. The orientation/transition will be hosted at the Southdale North Woodside site. Prince Arthur Junior High staff, with input from the committee, is organizing an open house for the community before the school closes.

The following events have already been planned by staff and students at Dartmouth High:

  • June 4th Open House for students and parents 10:00-2:00
  • June 5th Grade 8 and Grade 9 student orientation
  • June 8th Grade 8 parents meeting 6:00pm
  • June 29th Carnival Dance to welcome grade 8 students to Dartmouth High 7:00-9:00pm

Transitioning to a new school creates a mix of excitement and trepidation. The aim is to make this experience a positive one for students, parents/guardians and staff. We will continue to provide updates as the process unfolds. If you have any specific questions or concerns around the transition process, please bring them to the attention of your school principal.

Sincerely,

Pauline Murray
